Learn your lines by listening: the voice trainer

There is hardly any work in theatre as lonely as learning lines. At rehearsal, the whole ensemble stands around you — at home you sit alone with the script, covering your own line with your hand and silently mouthing the others’ cues. If you are lucky, you find a patient soul to read the other parts. If you are not, you read the same dialogue to yourself for the fortieth time. This is exactly where Theatilo’s voice trainer comes in.

Your play, read aloud with distinct voices

The voice trainer reads your play out loud — not with a single monotonous voice, but with distinct reading voices: every role is assigned a fixed voice that stays the same throughout the play. The countess always sounds like the countess, the servant always like the servant. Stage directions are handled by a dedicated narrator voice, so even when you are only listening you know who is entering and what is happening on stage. After a short while you recognise the characters by their sound before their name is even mentioned — much like in a radio drama.

Why fixed voices make the difference

That every role always sounds the same is more than a nice gimmick — it is the core of the learning effect. Lines are not stored in memory in isolation, but attached to their triggers: the cue, the rhythm of the dialogue, the voice of the person opposite. If you always hear your entrance after the same voice, you link the two together — just as it will happen later at rehearsal. Silent reading in the script cannot create this link; an audio play with fixed voices builds it as a side effect. Add to that the practical benefit: you can take your eyes off the paper. Learning lines suddenly works while doing the dishes, on the train and on the treadmill.

From script to audio play in a few steps

The path there is deliberately short. You open your piece in Theatilo and start the import: acts, roles and stage directions are detected automatically, without you having to mark or prepare anything. Then you generate audio for the acts you are currently rehearsing — each act individually, so only what is really needed gets created. After a few minutes an act is ready, and the whole ensemble can listen to it. Once generated, the act stays available permanently; if the text changes later, only what actually changed is generated again.

Practise the way that suits you

While listening, you decide what you want to hear. You choose the act and the roles — deselected roles are simply skipped during playback. This opens up very different ways of practising. If you are getting to know a scene for the first time, you listen to it in full and follow the scrolling text; the current line is always highlighted, and a tap on any passage jumps straight to it. If your lines are already halfway there, you deselect your own role and use the voice trainer as a tireless scene partner: the other roles are read aloud, and as soon as your cue comes, it is your turn — out loud, in your living room, as often as you like. And if you only want to revise your own scenes, you simply deselect the roles you never share the stage with.

On the go, at home, just before the premiere

Because the voice trainer works in the browser and in the iOS and Android apps, it is there wherever there would otherwise be dead waiting time: on the train, at the bus stop, out for a walk. Commuting time becomes rehearsal time. Especially in the weeks before the premiere, when the calendar is full anyway, this makes the difference — rehearsal continues at home without anyone having to read the other parts. And because all members with access to the piece use the same voice trainer, the whole ensemble hears the same version.
